Ready to dip your toes into the world of DIY and create something useful for your home? This project is perfect for beginners and uses a fantastic tool from the Ryobi ONE+ system: the Ryobi 18V ONE+ Drill/Driver. We’ll be building a simple wooden shelf – great for adding storage to any room!

What You’ll Need:

Wood: You’ll need a piece of wood for the shelf itself (the size is up to you! A common starting point is around 1 foot long, 6 inches wide, and 1 inch thick). You’ll also need two smaller pieces of wood for the shelf supports (aim for roughly 6 inches long each). You can often get these cut to size at your local hardware store.
Ryobi 18V ONE+ Drill/Driver: This cordless drill will make creating pilot holes and driving screws a breeze!
Drill Bits: A drill bit slightly smaller than your wood screws (for pilot holes) and a countersink bit (optional, for a cleaner finish).
Wood Screws: About four wood screws (the length will depend on the thickness of your wood, around 1 1/2 inches should work for a 1-inch thick shelf).
Measuring Tape: To help you position your supports accurately.
Pencil: For marking where to drill.
Sandpaper (optional): To smooth any rough edges.
Safety Glasses: Always important when working with tools!
Let’s Get Building!

Step 1: Sand Your Wood (Optional)

If your wood feels a little rough, now’s a good time to give it a light sanding with some sandpaper. This will give your finished shelf a smoother look and feel.

Step 2: Mark the Support Positions

Decide where you want to place the supports on the underside of your shelf. A good starting point is a couple of inches in from each end. Use your measuring tape and pencil to mark these spots clearly.

Step 3: Prepare Your Ryobi Drill/Driver

Attach your drill bit (slightly smaller than your wood screws) to your Ryobi drill/driver. The keyless chuck makes this super easy – just twist to tighten! Make sure your battery is charged and ready to go.

Step 4: Drill Pilot Holes

Pilot holes are your friend! They make it much easier to drive in screws and help prevent the wood from splitting. At each of your marked spots on the shelf, carefully drill a pilot hole straight down into the wood. If you have a countersink bit, you can use it after drilling the pilot hole to create a small recess for the screw head to sit flush.

Step 5: Attach the Supports

Now, position one of your support pieces against the underside of the shelf, aligning it with your pilot holes. Using your Ryobi drill/driver and the wood screws, carefully drive the screws through the support and into the pilot holes you created in the shelf. Repeat this process for the second support on the other side.

Step 6: Admire Your Handiwork!

And that’s it! You’ve built a simple wooden shelf using your Ryobi drill/driver. Now you can mount it on a wall (using appropriate hardware, not covered in this beginner guide) or simply place it on a surface to display your favorite items.

Why the Ryobi Drill/Driver is Perfect for This:

The Ryobi 18V ONE+ Drill/Driver is lightweight, cordless, and easy to handle, making it ideal for beginners. The variable speed trigger gives you control, and the keyless chuck makes changing bits quick and simple. Plus, it’s part of the versatile ONE+ system, meaning the same battery can power a whole range of other Ryobi tools for your future DIY adventures!
